LLL-What?

The new kid on the block in the legal field | Barb Esselstrom

Limited Licensed Legal Technicians (LLLT) are an alternative legal service option for people who can’t afford traditional legal help from an attorney. LLLTs are licensed by the Washington State Bar Association and have a limited scope of practice. This means LLLTs can advise and assist people going through divorce, child custody, and other family law matters, but they can’t represent people in court like an attorney can. The LLLT option was perfect for me because I wanted to help people better understand the court process and help them with their legal needs. I enjoy helping people navigate the court process.

I have been in the legal field for over 12 years. I was the fifth LLLT to become licensed in the State of Washington. LLLTs are non-attorney professionals in the legal field. I still work for a Family Law attorney in Mason and Kitsap counties, and I am also a partner in the first Legal Technician Law Firm of Washington State, Legal Technician Division, PLLC.

I previously volunteered with the Pro Se Docket for Mason County Superior Court and Thurston County Legal Clinic for Mason County matters. I moved to Spokane in 2017, and I love volunteering with the Volunteer Lawyers Program. Some Pro Se parties need help with the process of filing and completing their matters with the court. I love helping them achieve the sense of being able to accomplish this.

The VLP would like to recognize Barb as the blog’s first supporter. Without her, the VLP wouldn’t be online. She is also a great help in the VLP’s courtroom clinics and at the Forms and Motions class. The VLP couldn’t do what it does without supporters like Barb. Thank you!
